GRAU is an independent design office based in Singapore, working primarily across residential interiors.
Our approach begins with an understanding of space: its proportions, existing conditions, movement, light and the ways in which it will be inhabited.
Rather than pursuing a particular aesthetic, we look for clarity in each project. Architectural elements, materials and details are developed as part of a considered whole, creating spaces that feel both deliberate and natural to occupy.
GRAU undertakes a limited number of commissions, allowing each project to be developed with care from its initial concept through to realisation.
GRAU takes its name from eigengrau, the intrinsic grey perceived in the absence of light.
It reflects the belief that creativity need not begin with activity. Even in stillness, the mind continues to observe, imagine and give form to ideas before they become visible.
Each project begins with an examination of its existing conditions, the movement between spaces, the presence of light, and the rituals of those who inhabit them.
Rather than working towards a predetermined aesthetic, GRAU seeks to establish a spatial language particular to each setting. Proportion, circulation and the relationship between openness and enclosure form the foundation upon which materiality and detail are developed.
Elements are introduced with intention, allowing architecture, furniture and the spaces between them to exist as a considered whole.
There is an equal interest in what remains unbuilt. In restraint, in the quietness of a transition, and in the possibilities that emerge when a space is given room to breathe.
